●  1775, 5th August: Maharaja Nand Kumar was hanged in Calcutta for forgery. He was the first Indian to be executed by hanging.

● 1888, 5th August: Karl Benz, the inventor of the car, patented his first car in 1886. But the credit for driving this car alone for long distances goes to his wife. She went to the city 104 km away from this car on this day.

● 1962, 5th August: Nelson Mandela was jailed. 

● 1962, 5th August: American actress Marilyn Monroe was found dead at her home from a drug overdose.

● 1965, 5th August: The Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 began as Pakistani soldiers cross the Line of Control dressed as locals.
