If it comes on Sunday, this temple is crowded with devotees... But the villagers here are very strict about not eating meat and not touching alcohol. There is no roof of the sanctum sanctorum, the idol of Swami on the ground... the special features of this temple. This temple in Nandyala has a history of nearly three hundred years, where Lord Subrahmanyeshwar in the form of a serpent receives the worship of Koluvudiri devotees.
Compared to temples with tall gopurams and impressive architecture... this Subrahmanyeshwar temple is a bit different. S. in Nandyala. There is a popular story that this Swamy idol known as Subbaraya appeared here as Swayambhu in this temple located in Kothuru village.
Sthalapuranam
About three hundred years ago, a farmer named Beeram Chennareddy, who lived in this area, was plowing his field one day when he heard a loud noise as if something had hit a stone block in his plough. As the farmer lost his sight for a while... the surrounding farmers came and pulled back the plow and saw what was in the ground, the statue of Nagendra with twelve heads came out. At that time, a Brahmin who was passing by said that it was an idol of Subrahmanyeshwar and if he performed abishekam to that lord for three days, the farmer would regain his lost sight. By doing the same, the farmer's sight returned. Later, when all the villagers decided to build a temple together, Swami appeared in a dream and ordered that the construction of the temple should be started at night and finished before the rooster crows in the morning. So all the villagers placed the idol of Swami on the ground and started the construction, but only the wall around the sanctum was completed before Kodi Kuta. Since then
It is believed that the sanctum sanctorum was left as it was, and that is why the sanctum sanctorum here does not have a roof... It is believed that the Lord is receiving worship here as Kothuru Subbaraya.
Devotees visit Lord Subrahmanyeshwar and perform Abhishekam. Sunday is considered to be the auspicious day of Lord. On that day, thousands of devotees from the states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka reach the temple and pay their prayers, according to the temple administrators. Devotees believe that if they perform abhishe kala to the Lord every Tuesday during Rahukala, the Sarpadosas will be removed. That is why people who are suffering from illness, unmarried people and those who are looking for a job prefer to perform Abhishekam on Tuesday week. Those who have fulfilled their desires....will show interest in performing Naga Pratishma. Kothuru believes that Swami is self- sufficiently protecting them in that village. The villagers do not touch medicine or eat meat on Sundays as a custom since the construction of the temple and still continue. If any festival falls on Sunday, the meat of the day is cooked. At present there are 220 families and a population of more than 1000 in that village on Sunday
Even if someone dies, the funeral is performed the next day with the intention of not inconveniencing the devotees who reach the temple from different places.
