There are many temples across the country where Lord Parameswara is called by different names... but here the Lord is known as Donga Mallanna. It is believed that this temple, which has a history of about a thousand years, got its name because the thieves built it. It is remarkable that thousands of devotees come here to participate in the Kalyanam and the fair which is held here annually in the month of Margashira.
Temples are usually built by kings or devotees. But the story is that this Shiva temple was built by two thieves in one night. This thousand year old temple is found in Mallanna Peta village, Gollapalli mandal in Jagitiala district. In this temple where Bola Shankara, who fulfills the desires of devotees, is measured as a thief, two eyes are enough to see the annual fair held in Margashiram.
Sthala Purana:
There is an interesting story behind the construction of this temple. Once two thieves came to this town and stole cows. They said that if they could escape without anyone knowing about it, they would build a temple there. After knowing the matter for a while, he chased some thieves
They went back as the color of Dinchina cows changed. So the robbers built a temple for the lord in one night as they thought and ran away. It is said that when the villagers came to know about this, they started calling the Lord as thief. The inscriptions here say that the kings who ruled this region for years developed the temple. Devotees believe that if they offer bonas to the Lord who is measured here....
A grand fair...
In this temple Rudrabhishekam is performed daily to Lord Mallikarjuna. Also there are special pooja programs on Shivratri and Kartikam. Apart from these... Shuddha Panchminadu falls in the month of Margasira.
The festival is started from that day after performing the alms to the lord with great pomp and procession of the idols of the deity. Since then, the fair held every Sunday and Wednesday continues till Amavasya. The main attractions of these festivals, which are held under the auspices of Konduri clansmen, are the offering of bonas and the laying of patanas. At that time, two eyes were not enough to see the performances of Shiv Sattula and the performances of artists. In this fair which evokes the atmosphere of the festival, the devotees reach the Jamune temple in the early morning and make bonam in a new pot with the new crop and circumambulate the temple with drum beats and then report to the lord. Devotees believe that if they do that, their wishes will be fulfilled. Thousands of devotees from the joint districts of Karimnagar, Siddipet, Warangal and Manchiryala participate in the celebrations and pay prayers. Finally, the festival ends with Rudrabhishekam, Chandihoma and Poornahuti. In this temple you can also visit the idols of Ganapati, Nagadevata, Bhairava, Jaganmata etc. along with Swami.
