Children are known to be given various names like Ramu, Lakshmi, Suresh, Mahesh, Swapna... But the people of Kangng village in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills are a complete different story. The mothers of this village, which has a population of over 700, create a special raga for each of them to call their children when they are born. Everyone in the village has a unique ragam name. If you want to call them, someone calls you while singing that raga. This is why... Due to being in a hilly area, people here roam around those hills to graze their cattle and for cooking sugarcane and other products. In that case, if something is needed, calling the people who are far away by name will not be heard. If it is the same ragam like Koota, it will be heard and sung.
